Sally & Gilly

Sex: Female
Age: 1 year old
Experience needed: Looking for an owner who has hedgehog experience, is a veterinary professional, or has other experience working with special needs rescue animals.

These one year old sisters are a very unique case.
As you can see in their pictures, Sally has no eyes. The origin of her blindness is unknown. Amazingly, she is thriving and functions just like any other hedgehog. She eats kibble and treats, drinks water, enjoys going through tunnels, and runs on her wheel all night. She's very friendly, always has laid back quills, does not fear people, and is very easy to handle. She does not appear to be in any pain or to have any other apparent health issues (though other internal defects or genetic health issues aren't out of the question considering the possibility of her having been born without eyes). The only other thing "off" about her is that her nails grow in several different directions and look a little wonky. Besides that and the blindness, she is a fairly normal and happy hedgie.
She came in with her sister Gilly who she has cohabitated with for their entire lives. Gilly is also incredibly sweet and easy to handle. While she is on the small side for an adult, she does not have any of the issues that Sally has.
While hedgies are solitary animals in the wild and do not require companionship, this is a special case. Sally and Gilly mark the first time we have ever required that two hedgehogs be adopted together. When we transferred these girls to their quarantine enclosure after intake, we noticed that once Gilly began eating, Sally followed the sounds of her munching the kibble in order to find the food bowl and begin eating too. She then did the same with the water dish once hearing the sounds of Gilly lapping up water. As silly as it sounds, it definitely seems to help Sally adjust better when her sister is around to be her eyes and lead her to food/water/wheel.
We want an experienced, dedicated home for these two girls. Adjusting is quite difficult for a fully blind hedgie so we want to ensure that whoever adopts them can be their final and forever home. Due to the origin of Sally's blindness being unknown and the possibility of her having other unseen defects, Sally and Gilly require an owner who either works in the veterinary field or has the financial ability and willingness to get her any medical care she may need in the future.
These girls are both very sweet and will make amazing pets for the right person. They will be free to a good, qualified home.
