PikachuSex: Male
Age: At least 3 years Experience needed: Hedgehog experience, preferably a veterinary professional Pikachu is a super cute algerian standard gray boy with badger lines. He's one of our "hot mess rescues" as we call them. We would like to place him with a veterinary professional or an experienced hedgehog owner with the ability to provide him with any medical care he may need later on. He's on the older side and has the usual features of a senior hedgie (tattered ears, a bit underweight, etc). There's also a great deal of quill loss on his back. His previous owners explained it was from a mite issue a year and a half ago which was treated but for some reason the quills never grew back. Though he was already treated and we don't see any evidence of remaining mites, we still immediately started a round of Revolution Mite Preventative when he came in just in case and he has fully completed the treatments now. He also has very dry skin which his previous owners were treating with some coconut oil on his food. He hates baths and his owners tried to avoid them as much as possible due to the dry skin, which led to him getting a bit funky. Took a few baths to get his quills nice and clean, but he's definitely got a yellowish tint to his belly hair which doesn't seem to be fully going away with the baths so far. He appears otherwise healthy, has a good appetite, runs on his wheel a lot, and is quite active for an older guy. He can be shy at first but warms up and relaxes quickly after he gets to know you. Unlike many of the rescues we get in, Pikachu was well-loved and well cared for by his prior home and it was very difficult for them to say goodbye. They had him litter trained (though he's regressed a bit since coming in, likely due to stress), fed him a proper diet, only gave him filtered water, the whole nine yards. We believe we will end up just hanging onto him for the remainder of his life since there are very few people who would want to take on a hot mess senior like him, and we are fine with that and prepared to care for him for as long as he lives. But if his perfect owner is out there somewhere, we would be happy to see him have a one-on-one bond with an owner who can dedicate significantly more time to him than we can considering how many hedgies we have to split our time between on a daily basis. Pikachu would not have an adoption fee since he may require veterinary care in the near future and is a bit high maintenance when it comes to his skin. He is essentially a hospice placement. He would not be a good fit for anybody new to hedgehogs (unless they work in the veterinary field, or have lots of experience with other kinds of animals and have a great exotics vet on call.) If you think you may be a good fit for Pikachu, please reach out to us with some information on your home and your experience level. |
