Baby SpiceSex: Female
Age: 8 Weeks old Experience needed: Veterinary professional or experienced hedgehog owner with a good exotic vet We think it’s likely that we will end up hanging onto Baby Spice indefinitely. But once she is out of quarantine, we would consider homing her to someone who either works in a veterinary setting or who has hedgehog experience, a good exotics vet, and the means and ability to seek emergency veterinary care if she ever needs it. Baby Spice was brought to us after suffering a rectal prolapse. Prolapses, much like cancer, are one of those awful but totally random things that cannot be prevented by any amount of good husbandry or good breeding. It’s usually a result of straining while going potty. The good news: While prolapses can often be fatal, she survived it and is thriving thanks to receiving sutures from an excellent vet. The procedure was successful and she has since had the sutures removed and has healed up beautifully. The vet also ran fecal tests and did a full exam, which confirmed she’s perfectly healthy with no other apparent issues. The bad news: Once a hedgie has one prolapse, it increases the chances of it happening again. Because of this, we want to ensure she ends up with someone who is fully aware of this possibility and has the means and ability to get her treatment should it ever happen again. There is a very good chance that this was a one time thing and she will be fine from here on out. But just in case, we want her new family to be fully prepared. She has a good temperament. Like most well-socialized baby hedgies, she typically is only balled up when first grabbed or woken up but unrolls immediately and is happy to be handled. She is usually so chill that it was hard to get her to even ball up for a picture (hence why her feet are sticking out). We're surprised by how sweet she is considering all she’s been through at such a young age. Her new family would have the rare opportunity to both rescue a hedgehog in need and also be able to bond with them from the very beginning since she’s still a little baby. Baby Spice would have no adoption fee but again, is only available to approved owners due to her medical history.
